COMMONWEALTH GAMES FUNDRAISING SWINGS INTO GEAR

A MAJOR fundraiser will be held next month to officially launch the Gold Coast Mayor's Commonwealth Games Athlete Appeal - the Coast's official Melbourne Commonwealth Games team fundraising effort.

Hosted by distance running legend and Gold Coast Mayor, Councillor Ron Clarke, the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Athlete Appeal Dinner will be held at the Southport Sharks AFL Club on Thursday 13th October from 6.30pm.

Over 300 political, business and sporting luminaries are expected to attend to help kick start the effort.

As a highlight, expert sports commentator, Channel 7's David Fordham, will interview special guest Olympians Steve Moneghetti (distance running), Shane Heal (basketball) and the Gold Coast's own Nikki Hudson (hockey).

Councillor Clarke urged everyone to get behind the effort.

"Queenslanders are renowned for their abilities and enthusiasm in the sporting arena and their commitment when they are selected to represent their country," Councillor Clarke said.

"These athletes strive for success in sporting arenas around the globe every year to prepare for an event such as the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and they need every assistance we can offer.

"Development of athletes in this day and age takes time and money and the Gold Coast Mayor's Commonwealth Games Athlete Appeal has been established to provide a sharp focus for our local fundraising efforts," he said.

Gold Coast Mayor's Athlete Appeal Chairman, Commonwealth Games and Olympic swimmer, Jeff Van De Graaf, said the dinner is one of several major fundraisers planned between now and March.

"Anyone who has ever been close to elite sport knows how much it costs to not only compete in a major competition, but prepare for it.

"The Coast will have a large number of athletes heading to Melbourne next year and it's important that they get every possible support from the local community.

"We'll all bask in their success, so it's only fitting that we have a stake in getting them to the Games in the first place," he said.

The Salute 3 Great Aussie Tribute Show - a celebration of the music of John Farnham, Olivia Newton John and former Cold Chisel frontman Jimmy Barnes - will provide musical entertainment on the night.

Tickets for the Sharks dinner are now available at $99 per person or $990 for a table of ten from the Southport Sharks on 07 5532 1155.

The 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games will be held in the Victorian capital from 15th - 26th March.
