COUNTDOWN BEGINS FOR 2006 SPECIAL OLYMPICS
THE Special Olympics VIII National Games will be staged on the Gold Coast in October 2006 and organisers are preparing for the most special Games yet.
And with preparations in full swing organisers of the 2006 Special Olympics have put out the call for volunteers and corporate sponsors.
According to Gold Coast Special Olympics Chair, Paul Stevens, the Games will be a unique and rewarding experience for all involved.
"The eight days of competition will be a most memorable and enjoyable experience for organisers, sponsors, volunteers, parents, carers and most importantly the competitors," Mr Stevens said.
"Volunteers will be at the heart of every venue and every sport, and like the athletes themselves, will be important ambassadors during the Games.
"Many will have previous volunteering experience with such events as the Sydney Olympic Games and the Gold Coast Airport Marathon but I encourage everyone to apply.
"I also strongly urge the Gold Coast corporate community to get involved and show their support for the athletes.
"There's virtually a sponsorship level for every type and size of business," he said.
One thousand athletes with an intellectual disability and their carers are expected to converge on the Gold Coast to participate in various events during the Special Olympics.
The athletes will compete in such sports as athletics, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, ten-pin bowling.
Special Olympics is an international organisation of sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for athletes with an intellectual disability and currently serves 1.5 million children and adults in more than 60 countries.
People wanting further information, including those who may be interested in volunteering or financially supporting the 2006 Special Olympics, can write to the National Games Secretariat at 3 Springfield Crescent, Parkinson QLD 4115 or email carrobin@bigpond.net.au.
